Full Product Life Cycle | A Practical Example of How to Use Chordata
Imagine, if you will, that we’ve just signed world-renowned clarinetist Squidward Quincy Tentacles to your publisher’s roster of composers.
1. Create the Partner Entry
The first step in accepting Squidward to our company is to create a new Partner entry. In the Partners page, users can create a new Partner entry by clicking “New Partner” in the top right corner. Once the blank Partner entry has opened, the user can enter pertinent information about the Partner. Clicking “Save” in the dialogue box will save the entry to the database.
2. Create the Work Entry
Next, a Work must be created for the piece that we plan to publish. As with Partners, navigating to Works and clicking “New Work” in the top right corner will allow a user to enter pertinent information. Clicking “Save” in the dialogue box will save the entry to the database.
3. Create the Contract Entry
After the Work entry has been saved, a new Contract entry for this Work must be created by navigating to Contracts and clicking “New Contract” in the top right corner. In the blank entry that appears, signees can be added and a publisher can be selected under the “Info” tab. Any necessary Contract files should be uploaded here. Under the “Works” tab within this Contract interface, the appropriate Work entry can be connected to this Contract entry by typing the name of the Work into the form field at the bottom of the page.
4. Create the Product Entry from Work
Once the Contract is signed and all necessary Contract documents are uploaded, it is time to create the Product that will be published. Navigating to the relevant Work entry will present four buttons at the top of the screen: “Add New Work”, “Add New Derivative Work”, “Add New Product Based on Work”, and “Add New Contract Based on Work”. Clicking the third option will open a new Product entry with much of the relevant data (composer info, publisher, instrumentation, etc.) from the Work entry already filled in. Notice that clicking on the Works tab will show the connection to the Work from which the Product was created. When finished, click “Save” to save the Product entry to the database. Assuming that everything is in place, the Product is now ready for publication.
Entity Connections
It is important to note that every entry created throughout this process should now be connected within Chordata and is navigable from any other entry in the chain. When viewing the specific entry of any Partner, Work, or Product, the user should be able to view all associated Contracts, Works, and Products in the “Related Entities” tab on the right side of the entry’s page. Other such connections are available depending on context. Note that not all entities can be connected to every other. For example, Contracts cannot be connected to Products directly, only to Works. If you want to see a Contract’s connections to a Product, you can do an advanced search where the Contract is connected to a Work, and then that Work is connected to a Product.
